How can you help?

I think it will be powerful if the witness we offer to the larger church is not the witness of choking on our own righteous anger, but rather the witness of learning, more and more, how to love one another, and how to recognize the risen Christ in our midst.

-- Beth Stroud (April 27, 2003)

Pray
in whatever way is most natural and meaningful for you
Some specific prayer concerns:

- for The United Methodist Church

- for FUMCOG, its staff and members, and for the regular daily work of Beth’s ministry

- for Chris and Beth and our families

- for all gay and lesbian people serving in ministry and the choices they are called to make

- for all those who do not understand or accept differences in human sexuality as a God-given gift.

Make a contribution of $25.00, or whatever you can afford, to Beth’s legal defense fund.  Send contributions to:

FUMCOG
6023 Germantown Avenue
Philadelphia, PA, 19144

Please make your check out to FUMCOG and indicate “Beth Stroud Legal Fund.”  More information about the Beth Stroud Legal Fund...

More ideas from the Reconciling Ministries Network Ideas: How you can help
Take a seventh grader out
for ice cream
and listen to them talk about whatever is going on in their lives.
Ask them to tell you their thoughts and feelings about faith and God, and then just listen. (If you find yourself doing too much of the talking, get them another ice cream and try to be more quiet the second time.)
Visualize what justice and
peace would look like,
especially in your congregation or in your neighborhood.
Tell someone a funny joke
and make them laugh.

Buy fair-trade and environmentally friendly products.
For instance, check out the FUMCOG Bazaar on a Sunday morning, or buy your food from a Community Supported Agriculture farm such as Scarecrow Hill Farm (http://www.scarecrowhill.com).
Remind someone in your family who you haven't contacted for a while that you love them.
Take a Sabbath
Set your work, your car, your bills aside and just enjoy God’s love!

Invite someone else
to attend worship with you
especially if you have found a congregation that welcomes people of all sexual orientations

Study the Bible
Learn for yourself what it says about homosexuality, what that meant in the culture of the time, and what it says about justice and compassion. It may be even more helpful to study with a group.

Take a casserole to someone
you don't know very well
(e.g. a neighbor, a member of your congregation, someone who has recently been ill or lost a loved one, or someone you know is going through a difficult time in their family or at work).  Let them know that you are praying for them or thinking of them.
